BBFC advice: Contains strong sex
Let's get this right out of the way... Yep, Rachel Weisz spits into Rachel McAdams' mouth.... and that is meant to be erotic!
There is plenty to admire in Sebastián Lelio's movie about forbidden love but was THAT really necessary?
Unfortunately, there is no way around saying that the excellent performances of both actresses and the poignant subject matter were a tad overshadowed by a two-second saliva exchange.
I am no prude and a sex scene was important given the premise of Disobedience but boundaries had already been pushed.
Weisz and McAdams play Ronit and Esti who grew up in a very orthodox Jewish community in London.
Ronit has returned after the death of her father, a much-respected rabbi from whom she had been estranged for reasons which become clear during the film.
It turns out that, during her absence, Esti has married their mutual friend, Dovid (Alessandro Nivola).
However, it is soon apparent that Esti is gay and this is a marriage of convenience rather than love and the applecart is tipped upside down by the appearance of her former girlfriend.
Disobedience really grabbed my attention and not just for the spitting scene.
It delves into the beliefs of a religious community in a similar style to Apostasy got stuck into those of the Jehovah's Witnesses earlier this year.
And, in the cold light of day, the audience cannot help but believe that those who favour orthodoxy are out of their time.
Weisz and McAdams are terrific and totally convincing in their pursuit of forbidden love but so is Nivola in his defence of the teachings of the Torah and their modern application.
However, he is torn between practising what he preaches and the deep love he has for both women regardless of their sexuality.
Meanwhile, it struck me hard that the young straight women in the film are most angered by a deviation from what is expected.
Disobedience shows what happens when nature and nurture clash. It is fascinating to see which one wins.
Reasons to watch: Insightful drama played out by two great actresses
Reasons to avoid: THAT spitting scene
Laughs: None
Jumps: None
Vomit: Yes
Nudity: Yes
Overall rating: 8.5/10
Director quote - Sebastián Lelio: "I just loved the dynamics between the characters and the particular love triangle, especially the fact that these are human beings that are trying to do their best, and who are operating against a backdrop of more or less fixed ideas. "
The big question - Why aren't religious enthusiasts more tolerant?
