Blimey, did they really get their clothes off so much in 17th century Holland?
Apparently, the Dutch had two obsessions at the time - tulips and getting down to rumpy pump.
Well, that is if Justin Chadwick's box office flop is to be believed. Pretty much the whole cast were up to it but, thankfully, that didn't stretch to Judi Dench and Zach Galifianakis.
The makers of Tulip Fever laid out $25m to recreate Amsterdam of olden times and adapting Deborah Moggach's novel.
And do you know what? Despite its failure with the public and the critics, both Mrs W and I rather enjoyed it.
However, I wondered whether because its release coincided with the Harvey Weinstein scandal and his company produced it and there are scenes of sex, there was too much to put critics off.
Alicia Vikander plays Sophia who is bought as a wife by a successful businessman (Christoph Waltz) but fails to bear him a child despite many many attempts.
Meanwhile, she falls for an upcoming painter (Dane DeHaan) while striking a pose reminiscent of The Girl With The Pearl Earring.
At the same time, her servant (Holliday Grainger) is having ow's ye father with the local fishmonger (Jack O'Connell).
The link between them all, the local doctor (Tom Hollander) and the frenzy over rare tulips, seems unlikely but hangs together rather dramatically.
Vikander is one of the most impressive young actresses around today and she splendidly reflects the loathing of a marriage to an older man and the passion for a younger one.
I am beginning to be an admirer of DeHaan who has the twinkle of a screen bad boy.
And then there is Waltz, who always shines, alongside Grainger, O'Connell, Dench and Galifianakis as one of the strongest supporting casts of the year.
And it looks damn good. From the back streets of Amsterdam to the lavish costumes, there is great detail to Tulip Fever.
So why has it bombed? For once, I am stumped.
It is true that it doesn't have the smash and wallop of many of this year's major film releases but there surely must be room for something more than musicals and Marvel?
