The screen panned to the muscular figure of a middle-aged man with steely grey hair and three young chaps from the audience literally danced to the front of the auditorium, screeched in delight and threw what appeared to be confetti in the air.
Yep, the Ajith Kumar appreciation society (Sheffield branch) had turned up for the opening night of his Pongal (harvest festival) 2019 'entertainer'.
It was far from the last of the whoops and hollering. They even prompted others in the audience to join in.
I didn't mind. Screen 14 at Sheffield Cineworld is big enough for me to sit well away from the crowd so witnessing their joy was actually a pleasure.
I digress. Ajith plays a charismatic country fella who beats heads when he needs to but also shows quick feet on the dance floor.
The latter is a highlight of Viswasam which has some wonderfully colourful routines set against the backdrop of a fair which our hero is hoping to persuade the authorities to allow to return for the first time in a decade.
At the same time a group of doctors, led by Nayanthara (the crowd cheered rapturously when she appeared) arrives in his village and are initially impervious to his rather unsubtle charms.
Of course, barriers are worn down and it hardly gives the game away to report that, eventually, the two stars hook up.
It is thereafter that the dancing stops and the action really takes hold as the picture's backdrop moves to Mumbai.
Ajith shows that he can do boastful country fella, romancer and fearless protector in the same film.
So, no matter who are the opponents and whatever their weapons, he can see them off.
Is he as effective in proving himself to be a worthy husband and father? Well, you will have to watch Siva's film to find out.
Viswasam had me hooked throughout even if most of it were highly implausible with an ending which is far too cheesy.
Was it entirely down to the movie itself? Nope. It probably won an extra mark because of the atmosphere.
