A new year always begins with the best of intentions for the everyfilm quest which is why Mrs W and I found ourselves in the Odeon at Birmingham's Broadway Plaza at 10pm on a Saturday evening.
Yep, I drove back to Nottingham, having watched my football team lose at Scunthorpe and then on to Brum where we stayed at a Travelodge, so we could fit in a Nigerian film...
Which didn't finish until 1am.
As John Lennon wrote: "People say I'm crazy, doing what I'm doing."
Fortunately, Kemi Adetiba's King Of Boys was a great deal better than most of my experience with Nigerian cinema or Nollywood as it is known.
Sure, it does charge around a bit and there is an awful lot of shouting (in a screen which had ear-piercingly high volume) but it had us both engaged enough not to drop off as the clock drifted past midnight.
King Of Boys stars Sola Sobowale as Alhaja Eniola Salami - the leader of a crime empire who also has high political ambitions.
Salami has tried to cover the murderous tracks of her corruption but her brashness (boy, is she loud!) is making her allies nervous while there are younger pretenders to her crown.
Her rougher edges are ironed out by her daughter (Adesua Etomi) who is her stoutest defender despite her excesses.
Meanwhile, Nigerian rapper Reminisce plays the new hardman who is challenging Lagos's criminal order.
At the same time, Salami is under the microscope of the anti-corruption squad led by an investigator (Paul Sambo) with the highest morals in the city.
There are a heap of cultural references during King Of Boys which flew straight over the heads of Mrs W and me but clearly tickled others in the audience.
But despite this disadvantage, we were still engaged by the good-against-evil of Sambo's character versus the rest and then Salami trying to remain top dog despite increasing odds against her.
And then there is the whole issue with complacent politicians literally getting fat after supping unhindered from the gravy train.
King Of Boys tries to cover many bases and has some editing flaws but it still has considerable potency and Sobowale plays a criminal head honcho like none I have seen before.
Reasons to watch: One of Nollywood's more compelling thrillers
Reasons to avoid: Lots of very loud shouting and head pulled off a live chicken
Laughs: Two for us - more for others
Jumps: None
Vomit: Yes
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 7/10
