Hold on a minute - The Rider would be compelling anyway but I have just read that its cast are not professional actors.
Indeed, they are real people playing out traumatic events which happened to them.
Yes, it is quite unlike any film I have ever seen before because director Chloé Zhao has scripted a drama out of actual events.
Apparently, she knew rodeo rider Brady Jandreau before he had a terrible head injury which forced him to stop riding.
As he recovered, it was decided to make the incident the focal point of a film.
It is a long way from being a cowboy to a film star but Jandreau is a natural - his quiet struggle is enthralling and his performance is so good that I wouldn't quibble at him being in the Oscar mix.
Some might say he is merely reprising an event which happened to him but let me assure you there are some devastating scenes which need acting of the highest order.
Jandreu is complemented by his sister Lily who is autistic and his father Tim who both look equally comfortable in front of a camera.
But the real kick in the tail is when he visits his friend Lane Scott in a facility for those with head injuries.
Lane was a real rodeo rider who cannot speak or walk and has to be fed through his stomach.
The interaction of Brady and Lane seems so natural even though both of them know that they are playing to Zhao's script.
The Rider is clearly not a freewheeling account of the dangers of rodeo riding or life as a modern-day cowboy.
It is a beautifully crafted and scripted piece by a very talented director who has somehow inspired the real-life subjects to act so naturally that it beggars belief.
It has to be a very late entry into this year's top 20 movies and thank you to the Twitter follower who recommended it.
