BBFC advice: Contains moderate sex references
We really are winding up now, but there was still time to take in another recommendation from a Twitter follower who claimed Badhaai Ho was his film of the year.
I wouldn't go as far as that but Amit Sharma's movie certainly has plenty of spark and some great family moments.
It also enhances the reputation of Ayushmann Khurrana as one of the best young Indian actors in Bollywood today.
Khurrana plays the son of a middle-class family who lead a traditional if mundane life until his fifty-something mother (Neena Gupta) becomes pregnant.
The film then becomes focused on the reaction to the news from her immediate family and beyond.
There is no doubt that those with Indian heritage would derive more amusement from Badhaai Ho than I did. There are a lot of gags which lean on Indian culture.
However, it says much for its quality that I was still highly entertained and engaged.
The central theme is family loyalty and what happens when it is tested by shame (in this case the pregnancy of a mother deemed to be too old to be having sex).
Khurrana's character is appalled by the pregnancy as is his younger brother (Shardul Rana) and their indignation causes friction at home and with friends and other family.
My favourite character is the bungling and penny-pinching dad (Gajraj Rao) whose moment of desire for his beloved wife has led to a very unexpected result.
He bumbles along not knowing what to say or do to try to keep the peace. Rao's facial expressions alone bring the audience on side. Meanwhile, his comic timing is spot on.
His caustic mother, played by Surekha Sikri, is another gem. At her age she has no time for political correctness nor worries about upsetting people and so every sentence has bite.
Badhaai Ho isn't an out-and-out comedy. There is a dollop of romance from Khuranna and Sanya Malhotra whose on-screen relationship in tripped up by his mother's condition.
The movie is also punctuated by rows surrounding the pregnancy and also the potential dangers it brings for the older mother.
But overall Badhaii Ho is a feelgood movie - and I am very glad I caught up with it.
Reasons to watch: Sparky comedy
Reasons to avoid: Some might find its premise too daft
Laughs: I would suspect lots for others but only two for me
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 8/10
Director quote - Amit Sharma: "My grandmother and my grandmother’s mother were pregnant at the same time. So there are many characters in the film who are slightly inspired by people from my own family."
The big question - How would you react if your mum/wife said she was expecting?
