It stands to reason that, because Indian culture is so different from the West, its films often contain subject matters which will jar with those brought up here.
For example, I struggle with the obsession with weddings, why nothing is done about corruption and the devotion to religious deities.
Uncle throws a new one forward - the fears engendered by a young woman being in the presence of an older man for a long period of time.
Ok, to be fair that might hold water in the West too.
Anyway, Mammootty plays the title character - a family friend who offers the favour of a six-hour ride home to a young woman (Karthika Muraleedharan) when her college is closed because of strikes.
She doesn't know that he is a womaniser so when she tells her father (Joy Mathew) that she has accepted a lift, he is on tenterhooks
Nevertheless, he is not prepared to reveal his fears to his wife (Muthumani).
Almost all of Gireesh Damodar's film takes the form of a road trip punctuated by reaction to its setbacks by a dad who is worried his daughter will succumb to his friend's charms.
The cleverness of Uncle is the frisson throughout the film which gives the impression that Mammooty's character is up to no good.
Indeed, he even confesses to his friend's daughter that he is of dubious character.
However, there is also a sense that she is falling for him and, as a consequence, the audience is left holding its breath.
Indeed, parents will place themselves in the shoes of the sweating father and the mother who is oblivious to any potential problems.
However, despite the tension, it is also true that very little happens and most of the action is playing out in the dirty minds of those watching rather than on screen.
Nevertheless, it says much of its cast and director that it still packs a punch and asks deep questions about trust, parenting and friendship.
