BBFC advice: Contains strong language, bloody violence, injury detail, drug misuse
Was it really 27 years ago since Jodie Foster was attempting to tease out clues from a serial killer in Silence of The Lambs?
During the early 90s, Foster was Hollywood royalty had her pick of the prime roles.
Nowadays, she is something of a recluse, preferring to spend time with her family away from the prying paparazzi.
And suddenly, in her own words during Hotel Artemis she is "an old woman".
Hold on a cotton-pickin' minute. She is the same age as me!
Foster plays the only nurse in an establishment which takes in patients who would rather no questions were asked about their injuries.
Therefore, those being treated are an assassin (Sofia Boutella), two robbers (Sterling K. Brown, Brian Tyree Henry), corrupt, rich guy (Charlie Day) and crime boss (Jeff Goldblum).
Meanwhile, while tempers are frayed inside, there are riots outside and the injured are desperate for help.
However, in this dystopian society, brute force is needed to see off those who are unwelcome and the nurse has security in the form of a man mountain played by Dave Bautista.
Both Mrs W and I were engaged by Hotel Artemis without really understanding the point of Drew Pearce's movie.
Foster is engaging in the lead role, portraying a character who is very different to any she has previously played on the big screen.
Initially, the nurse appears to have seen it all and done it all but gradually the layers of her past come back to haunt her.
Meanwhile, her patients are quirky or just odd in a Sin City sort of way.
Hotel Artemis is dark, gory and a bit strange and, even in our post-film conversation, we couldn't put our finger on why we quite liked it. Probably, it was because of its dark originality.
Reasons to watch: Jodie Foster has you have never seen her before.
Reasons to avoid: Its heavy violence
Laughs: None
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 7/10
Director quote - Drew Pearce: "I've got a better cast than I had any right to get, it’s one of the best you’ll see this year. It all started with Jodie. She somehow found the script, even before it was out there. When I met her I instantly wanted her and when she came onboard it acted a big seal of approval."
The big question - What prompted Jodie Foster to come out of the shadows for this?
