SLENDER MAN
Cert 15
93 mins
BBFC advice; Contains sustained threat, strong horror

Do teenage girls really like this type of movie? And if they do, where did we all go wrong?
Slender Man is one of the duffest films of the year. The only point it can possibly have is if there is a market for horror which could only scare a 15-year-old.
This is spookiness seen through the eyes of girls - four college pals who find themselves being stalked by a child-snatcher with branch-like limbs.
The premise of Sylvain White's film has echoes of The Ring in that its reverberations are set off by the viewing of a video.
This time, four friends (Joey King, Julia Goldani Telles, Jaz Sinclair and Annalise Basso) try to spice up a boring night by viewing a recording which comes with a warning of dire consequences.
Despite the latter, they watch it and progressively become under the terrible spell of the faceless Slender Man.
Yep, it is just as crass as it seems.
What gets me about these type of films is that the girls seem remarkably together in its early stages to the point of not even speaking to their parents let alone the police.
Would youngsters really react that way if a best friend had disappeared mysteriously?
And why on earth would they be going into dark woods after an abduction - especially if they really fear something supernatural has taken her away? (In any case, wouldn't the police be combing every inch of the neighbourhood?).
I digress.
White's movie is choc-a-bloc with supposedly creepy moments in which the girls hallucinate about Slender Man or are confronted by his evil.
The problem is that its format is so templated that anyone who has ever watched a horror film will know exactly what is coming.
There have been reports that gory horror scenes have been left out and that might explain why I couldn't find a single interview with the director.
Or maybe he has simply run away in shame.
If you haven't seen a horror movie and you enjoy exaggerated screaming from the big screen, this could be for you. Everyone else should give it a very wide berth.

Reasons to watch: If you are a teenage girl and have never watched a horror movie
Reasons to avoid: Cliche after cliche after cliche

Laughs: None
Jumps: One
Vomit: Retching
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 2/10

The big question - Do teenagers really like this stuff or are studios out of touch?
