A WOMAN CAPTURED

BBFC advice: Contains infrequent strong language, upsetting scenes

"SHE IS 52!?"
Mrs W's involuntarily loud reaction to the revelation of Marish's age reflected just how much the world had taken out of the poor woman.
Toothless and with deep creases across her sullen face, the Hungarian could have been taken for 80.
Marish is what has become known as a modern slave. She works 12 hours a day in a factory and gives her money to the person who has effectively become her owner.
Bernadett Tuza-Ritter came across the story of Marish while she was intending to create a five-minute short film.
Her work has the permission of Marish's 'mistress' Eta because she believed it was going to be an insignificant portrait and she would not be filmed.
Indeed, Eta and her family are never seen during A Woman Captured but they are heard throwing insults at poor Marish.
Meanwhile, Tuza-Ritter becomes closer to her subject and she discovers the appalling conditions in which she lives.
And when trust is established, Marish opens up about how she became a modern-day slave and cannot even see her beloved daughter any more.
But, dare she try to make her way on her own? And if she did, how would she cope without money?
Apparently, Marish's case is far too common today. There are tens of thousands of modern slaves who are treated like sub-humans by those who exploit them.
It is difficult to highlight which was the most disgusting point of her treatment but the way Eta's children speak about her is particularly shocking.
How could they have been brought up to think they could treat another person so badly?
A Woman Captured is another example of human cruelty - it is hard to believe that it could really happen in 2018 and bravo for Tuza-Ritter for highlighting Marish's case.
It did, however, prompt the fear that cases even more horrendous than Marish's are going unreported.
Perhaps this film will prick consciences and inspire people to report them.

Reasons to watch: A shocking story of an exploited individual
Reasons to avoid: It is quite upsetting

Laughs: None
Jumps: None
Vomit: None
Nudity: None
Overall rating: 8/10

Director quote - Bernadett Tuza-Ritter: "I shot this film under dangerous circumstances. My access was built on trust, so I was not able to invite any other crew member to the shooting. If I wanted to make this film, my only chance was to grab my own camera and walk into that house."

The big question - How can people be so ghastly to each other?
